STOCKS TO WATCH
Hedge Fund Situational Awareness “SA” blew up last month triggering wild swings in the share price of numerous technology firms. Citadel stepped in to calm the markets after it acquired the portfolio of SA at a 10% discount. The problems SA faced were really the result of three foolish actions it took. First, a large portion of its portfolio was in illiquid securities. Second, the portfolio was highly concentrated. Finally, there was too much leverage on the portfolio. Throughout our history, numerous individuals and firms have suffered financial ruin due to excessive leverage and debt. Both Lehman Brothers and Archegos Capital Management are recent examples of the danger created by excessive leverage and debt. With Margin Debt now at an alltime high, many market observers are concerned that this issue could soon add more turbulence in the market.
